Are Music Exams Important?

For some students, taking music exams can be quite beneficial. Students can take performance and /or theory exams. Music exam based programs are a complete and comprehensive music program covering numerous technical exercises, sight reading, ear training, improvisation and a comprehensive playlist of music to learn from specific eras. Music exams can give the student as a goal to work towards. It can achieve a higher and sometimes more competitive level of playing and performance. For those students who are serious about music and are considering music as a career, it is very important to take exams. When considering music in a post secondary level such as University or College, entrances into these programs are based on the grade level that the student has achieved.

Music teachers are also often measured against Conservatory Grades. It gives music companies such as Imagine Music Inc a measurable tool. We know what that music teacher has accomplished.

As for the beginning music student, most students start in a preliminary course. They can either continue in that course which usually progresses in levels and then later branch off into supplementary music or the student can go into an music exam based system. Two programs that come to mind are the Royal Conservatory of Music which is a classically based or Conservatory Canada which also offers both a classically based program and a Contemporary Music Program.

At Imagine Music Inc our music lesson programs are individualized. Both the music teacher, the student and when necessary, the parent can decide which route to take. Most of our clients prefer the less rigorous route and prefer to focus on music that has meaning for them and can bring them enjoyment.

1. You play in a band and need proper vocal training.
2. You need to understand music theory.
3. You need to work on improvisation or techniques.
4. Or very simply, you just want to play a musical instrument for fun and relaxation.

Our music students ask us to help them achieve their long term musical goals. This can be done in many ways and sometimes an exam route may or may not be the only solution.
